Aiden’s a pain in the ass – for the reader but more for the men to whom he gives himself in this
vividly composed novel. While being a pain-seeker, he wants what he wants on his terms while
pretending to play the games of others, his Doms. His fulfillment never includes what really
bothers him, his very nature. Defense mechanisms shield his rationality. A dangerous, sexually
wild relationship convinces him that his emotional purpose in life is only that, and that he is
unworthy to pursue his intention to attend graduate school as preparation for a career in acting.
Neither his trio of female friends nor the interesting man he meets, Keaton, can break through
Aiden’s maddening inability to cope with anything but rough sex. About a hundred pages into
the story, Keaton begins a campaign of psychological patience so exceptional in its clear-
headedness that students of mental health might read the book just to soak up the disciplinary
methodology. Remember the old slogan, "The Power of Positive Thinking"? The author uses its intention
here as I have never seen it before, apportioned with soul-satisfying interplay between the two main
characters and laced with all the necessary eroticism implied by the title. Achievement: remarkable.

By His Rules J a Rock 9781611188318 Books Reviews

Oh Aiden, how you kept me on my toes…..I kept thinking this would be a really good, but predictable story. And it was really good, but the predictable? Not so much. I’m always surprised by a genuinely vulnerable character. Not weak or cowardly, but vulnerable. Aiden was amazing to follow. The massive growth in such a short amount of time is a tribute to the author’s ability to give a character his due without wasting the reader’s time. This was really a love story, and I hated Scott until the end, regardless of his seeming regrets. You knew he was always going to be a bastard. If Aiden had given him the slightest of second chances, the monster would have returned. Keaton on the other hand, was stronger than he appeared. I kept thinking he was going to end up being used by Aiden – as a life lesson to Aiden about using people. But he turned out to be the strongest of them all. We all need a Keaton. This was a thoroughly good read, and is adoptable by a number of different genres. Worth the two sittings (at most) it would take. It was fluid, with little to no grammar errors and a story that crosses all the right lines.
My Review
Okay, you need to go into reading this book that the first 30% of the book is about Aiden with his abusive dom, Scott. It's not hardcore graphic, but it is difficult in that you can see how much the abuse, both physical and mental is affecting Aiden. While I wasn't a huge fan of these scenes...like I said, they weren't easy...they were important just so the reader could see where Aiden's mindset was later when things are developing with Keaton and just how much Scott's abuse changed him.

Aiden likes the BDSM world because he likes the pain and discipline. Keaton's need from this world is so different from that. Keaton practices domestic discipline...meaning he and the person he's in a relationship with have a very specific set of house rules. He simply needs to be in charge. Break them and you will be disciplined. I honestly don't think this ever would have worked for Aiden before his relationship with Scott. But after, he is so wounded and broken, the rules allow him to become whole again with the kind of structure he needs to achieve that.

For Keaton, his lifestyle is all about taking care of someone else. And in this book, that is something that Aiden needs desperately. Aiden is in a really bad place...really, almost suicidal so he needs gentle handling. I loved how Keaton handled things with him even when Aiden was being impossible. But I also really liked that the author allowed Keaton to have doubts and make mistakes too. This is a difficult situation and as much as Keaton is trying to make it better, he's not infallible.

This is definitely a BDSM book with a different slant. I've never heard of domestic discipline before and like the two characters in the book, have a hard time seeing it work long term....like 40 years down the road, but this book provided an interesting and entertaining exploration of it.
~3-3.5/5

“This was submission, thought Aiden. Not Scott forcing him to bear more and more pain without crying. Not men at Obey ordering him to his knees to suck them. This willing, necessary surrender to someone who would never hurt him. To someone he loved.” (, pg. 231)

I was expecting to like this a lot more.

Aiden ends up in a relationship that he wants at first, with a guy who’s rough and demanding, only ends up changing Aiden in bad and unhealthy ways, and then starts really abusing him. Aiden starts eating less and working out more, going to work less. Finally there’s a breaking point, and Aiden ends it. And finds Keaton, who’s sweet and caring and only wants the best for Aiden.

Aiden frustrated me, a lot. I could see why he got in the relationship in the first place, and while it frustrated me when his eating problems got bad, I understood why he stayed, and I liked when he finally left. But then he kept fighting Keaton, not doing what he wanted, being a general pain. And while I liked Keaton and their relationship, I didn’t love it. I didn’t feel for either of them like I thought I would. And while I liked the ending, I didn’t love it.

I generally just didn’t quite connect as much as I thought I would. I didn’t care for the characters as much as I should have. This just didn’t work as well as it could have, in the end, though I’m not fully sure why.
